In the 2022 Annual Forum on Women & Homelessness, we discussed:

  • Where are we now and how did we get here?
  • Sex, control and homelessness
  • What’s happening with our teenagers?
  • What do we need to do to make Queensland the safest State for women, within the context of housing?
  • All of us, together. Working collaboratively as a sector to halt the pathway to homelessness

The pathway to homelessness for women in Queensland – a story of coercive control, violence and systemic disadvantage.

For the past 137 years The Lady Musgrave Trust has housed young women and their children who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness across our State. This remains our mission until a time when all women live in safety in Queensland.

Creating safer family environments is essential to influencing the pathway to homelessness and an opportunity for everyone in our community to make a real difference.

Our behaviours and attitudes should not be underestimated. How we view gender roles, sexual consent and how we teach our young people respect in relationships can set them up with strong foundations. As communities and as individuals, we have an opportunity to shape positive behaviours that can prevent the leading causes of homelessness for women.

While great strides have been made in raising awareness for these issues, creating real change is a continuum that requires effort from all of us as organisations, communities and individuals.

We can all do more, to prevent, to challenge, to ask questions and support those who need us.
